About Magician Matt Matthews

A Connecticut native, Matt Matthews has been performing magic his whole life. Matt specializes in kids and family magic, keeping an emphasis on making the show extra silly to hold the attention of young kids. “My job is basically to be an idiot,” says Matt Matthews. “The primary theme of the show is that I’m not really in control of the magic. Sometimes the kids control it and sometimes it just happens. But it’s usually being done outside of my control, much to the delight of the children.” While Matt performs shows at all kinds of venues, from libraries to school shows, he considers kids’ birthday parties to be his specialty. “I love being able to make the day special for the birthday child. In my birthday magic show, I make sure they get to come up and be a helper at least twice – once at the beginning of the show and again at the end. And sometimes the birthday child is too young or just doesn’t want to come up; that’s fine! If I can, I give the spotlight to a sibling or a cousin.”

Matt Matthews’ philosophy is keeping the kids engaged. “My kids got invited to a birthday party at the Beardsley Zoo once,” Matt says, referencing the historic attraction located in Bridgeport, Connecticut. “The main attraction for this party was this show-and-tell type of presentation where the zookeepers brought out animals to show the kids. It was cute enough, but it was just so boring. The guy droned on and on about the diet and sleeping habits of animals and the kids were just restless and couldn’t wait for it to be over. You hire a professional for a birthday party because you want to add to the experience, not take away. When I do a magic show in Bridgeport, it’s high energy, high participation, so that the kids are engaged and laughing their butts off the whole time."

Where To Host A Party In Bridgeport

During the spring, summer, and early fall, hosting your party outside is a great idea! If possible, it’s always recommended to have your magic show indoors, but Matt will adapt his show to fit your needs. If you’re not able to host a party at your home, you can start by looking to the Bridgeport parks, such as Seaside Park, Beardsley Park, and Ellsworth Park. You can request a permit to use the parks for your party at the Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Department.
